Minutes of May 19, 2010 Meeting

Meeting called to order with a Salute to the Flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Evelyn Morgan.

Guests include Nat'l Ass't Sgt.at Arms Mary Castillo, Fl. State Chaplain John Palermo and George Gencius.

Roll Call: Present were Cmd't Palermo, Sr.Vice Gutierrez, Judge Advocate Castillo, Jr. Past Cmd't Handerhan, Adjutant Pacini, Paymaster Ruggiero, Chaplain Evelyn Morgan and Sgt. at Arms Jeff Morgan.

Applications for Membership: Jose Garcia

Sr. Vice Cmd't Gutierrez exercised his duty taking command as District 10 Commandant Jim Ruggiero Performed the ceremony of Initiation swearing in Commandant John Palermo and Judge Advocate Mary Castillo. Congratulations were extended by the detachment.

Minutes: Cathy read the minutes of April 21, 2010 . With no additions or corrections Jim Ruggiero motioned to accept seconded by Hy Finkelstein.

Correspondence: Letter from Veterans Coalition of So Florida

requesting the detachment again take part in the Memorial Day Services on Monday May 31. Invitation was accepted. Dick Lee will lower and raise the flag at the ceremony.

In a letter the subject on Khaki shirts is not to be discussed at any meeting.

Mike Burns has donated gifts for the convention. Mike will receive a Certificate of Appreciation.

Paymaster Report: Jim gave his report of accounts for the month of April. Tony Gutierrez motioned to accept seconded by Mary Castillo.

Sickness and Distress: Marvin Schentzel is home from the hospital. Gad Aflalo underwent bypass surgery and is in ICU, will follow up on when he is able to have visitors. Jeff Morgan asked that the detachment go as a group to visit and asked for a show of hands as to who would participate.

Report of Officers: Tony G. said a caller left a message on the answering machine saying he had a 3 by 6 framed poster of Iwo Jima and would like to donate it to the detachment to display at our post and not to be given to an individual.

Cliff announced Ken from Marathon donated blank cartridges and he was given an ordering form when more is needed. . Jim too received 18 boxes of clips.

Standing Committees: Jim spoke of the June Convention requesting volunteers sign to assist in the hospitality suite or where needed. He asked for only two hours of a volunteer's time. The cut off date for dinners and ads has been extended from May 25 th to June 2 nd.

Jim announced Intercoastal's Installation of Officers is tomorrow night (Thursday). They are having an open house and spaghetti dinner. They will need to be informed of attendance so they can cook enough spaghetti. Pembroke Pines will be forming a detachment if they can get enough new members.Next months meeting is the night before the start of the convention whereas you can take any donated items.

Unfinished Business: Marilyn and Dale spearheaded a Marine Troop Care Package Program at Our Lady of Lourdes Church and with the assistance of our detachment members 11 boxes were shipped and $1179.69 was collected. A Certificate of Appreciation and a thank you letter will be given to Father Reardon.

New Business: The Marine Corps.League National Convention will be held August 8-14 in Greensboro N.C. Detachment members were asked who would be attending to support Vic Vultaggio from Florida as National Commandant.

Todd Renna announced his son Andrew has been promoted to Corporal.

Next meeting scheduled for June 16, 2010.

Minutes of April 21, 2010 Meeting

Meeting called to order with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Trevor Wharton.

Roll Call: Present were Sr.Vice Commandant Guiterrez, Jr.Vice Motes, Jr Past Cmnd't Handerhan, Judge Advocate Mirsky, Adjutant Pacini, Paymaster Ruggiero and Sgt. at Arms Jeff Morgan.

Sr. Vice Commandant Guiterrez presided over the Ceremony of Initiation swearing in Marine Dowd into the Tamarac Detachment 755. Marine Dowd was given a warm welcome

Minutes: posted on the tables. Dick Smith motioned to waive the reading seconded by Gad Aflalo.

Paymaster Report: posted on the tables. Kevin O'Callaghan motioned to waive the reading of the account seconded by Joe Motes.

Sickness and Distress: Jeff reported Evelyn's family members are not well and still needing our prayers. Joe Mirsky's niece is recovering from an illness originating in Afghanistan and Marilyn was having carpal tunnel surgery on Thursday.

Report of Officers: Joe announced a Devil Dog meeting in Pompano on Thursday.

Standing Committee: Jim covered the Convention June 17-24. Jim stressed the importance of the membership attending the dinner. Forms were available for meal choice. The necessity of the donations of items for the hospitality suite and assistance of giving time working the hospitality suite was covered. Jim is unable to solicit ads or funds for the journal and asked the membership for help.

A Color Guard is needed and JROTC cadets will be attending camp at that time. Other sources will be looked into.

Unfinished Business: Elections

Chairman Gad Aflalo delegated the duty to Jim Ruggiero.

Jim opened the nominations for Commandant. Last month John Palermo accepted the position of Commandant if elected. Nominations were put on the floor three times and with no other nominations Jr. Past Commandant Handerhan cast the one vote for John Palermo as Commandant.

•  Jim opened the nominations for Judge Advocate. Last month Mary Castillo accepted the position of Judge Advocate if elected. Nominations were put on the floor three times and with no other nominations Jr. Past Commandant cast the one vote for Mary Castillo as Judge Advocate. The Elections Closed.

In order to be in compliance with National By-Laws the Detachment By-Laws needed to be suspended. We needed to have had three months of nominations of officers and in February we did not have a quorum. In order to hold the Installation Of Officers for 2010-20111 on April 19 th Joe Motes motioned to suspend the department by-laws seconded by Jeff Morgan.

Jim Ruggiero held the Installation of Newly elected officers and appointees swearing in Sr. Vice Cmnd't Guiterrez, Jr.Vice Cmnd't Motes, Historian Wharton, Sgt.at Arms Jeff Morgan and Fund Raiser Gad Aflalo.

Good of the League: Dale and Marilyn will be holding a Troop Care Package Program at the Lady of Lourdes Church on May 14 and 15 th . They would need volunteers in packaging the donated items for mailing. There was a show of hands of those available. The date was in conflict with the Marathon meeting.

With no other announcements the meeting was closed.

Next scheduled meeting is Mary, 19, 2010.

Minutes of Meeting March 17, 2010

Meeting called to order at 1930 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Evelyn Morgan.

Roll call: Present include: Cmnd't Palermo, Jr.Vice Motes, Jr. Past Cmnd't Handerhan, Adjutant Pacini, Paymaster Ruggiero, Chaplain Evelyn Morgan, Sgt.at Arms Jeff Morgan, VAVS Handerhan and Color Sgt. Norberto.

Comandant Palermo presided over the Ceremony of Initiation swearing in Marine Crouch into the Tamarac Detachment 755. Marine Crouch was given a warm welcome by the membership.

Minutes of Feb. 17 meeting : Cathy read the minutes and with no corrections Mary Castillo motioned to accept seconded by Joe Motes.

Correspondence: 100 soccer balls donated by Miami FBI were deflated for the troop pkgs. thank you cards with 100.00 donations each from Elizabeth Hoover and William Marks. $100.00 donation for troop pkg program from American Legion Aux. and booster ck from Gerald Colbert.

Paymaster Report : Jim explained the addition error found in the recent audit transferring1000.00 from savings to operating which will be re written and given to the adjutant. He spoke on the budget problem. Cliff Handerhan motioned to accept seconded by Joe Motes.

Sickness and Distress : Evelyn brought us up to date on her brother. He is out of the coma doing better but has a long way to go and still needing our prayers. Jim's mother has taken two falls breaking a hip and dealing with heart and b/p issues needing our prayers and Christopher was ailing from a bug.

Special Committees : Jim stressed the importance of volunteers in different capacities for the hospitality suite at the June convention. It is equally important our members try to attend the dinner.

The District 10 Meeting has been rescheduled to May 14 and 15 in Marathon . Rooms will need to be booked if attending.

Marine Mary Castillo reported on the MCL SE Division Conference held March 4-7 in Mobile Al. The wearing of kahki shirts in ceremonies may be brought up again at the National Convention.

Jim spoke regarding the June convention to help out with water or booze for the hospitality suite.

And, the Tamarac detachment will be celebrating a 20 th Anniversary next year and would like to hold a reunion at a hotel with food somewhat comparable to that of our June convention. He will be checking the Charter for the exact date. The membership was in agreement for a party.

Joe Motes nominated Mary Castillo for Judge advocate seconded by Angelo Norberto.

Jim asked three times for any other nominations and Cliff Handerhan nominated Joe Mirsky for Judge Advocate. Joe declined. The nominations closed.

John Palermo will accept the position of Commandant if elected. Mary Castillo will accept the position of Judge Advocate if elected. Joe Motes will accept the position of Jr. Vice Commandant if elected.

Joe Mirsky accepted the temporary position of Judge Advocate and sworn in by Cmnd't Palermo.

Good of the League:

Cliff, Jeff, Angelo and Tony were Color Guards at the Oriole Gardens III St Patrick's Day Parade March 17.

MCL and Auxiliary scholarship fund tickets are on sale.

Marine Care Package Program at Lady of Lourdes Church will be announced at a later date.

Cathy spoke on the Marine Corps League Care Package Program to be held at Oriole Gardens III March 20 and 21st.

Mary mentioned the Semper Fi magazine articles and photos on World War II veterans

Joe Motes donated an ice cream cake to celebrate the March and April birthdays of Harvey and Marilyn.

Minutes of Meeting February 17, 2010

Meeting was called to order with a salute to the flag, opening prayer by Cmnd't Palermo and cancelled for lack of a quorum resulting in an open session discussion.

Guests included Marines Carl Crouch and Jack Monas.

Evelyn Miller was a ten week club winner donating $25.00 to the detachment.

Joe Mirsky and Cathy Pacini brought in addresses for the troop package program.

Thank you letter from the Leathernecks for recent donation.

Cathy spoke on Marine Care Package Program to be held at O.G. 3 Clubhouse on March 20 and March 21.

Jim Ruggiero spoke on the honored 42 Wounded Warriors flown in for the Super Bowl.

The Nominations of Officers was postponed for lack of a quorum.

Jim discussed the up coming June Convention held at the Marriott Hotel in June. He stressed the importance of ads for the journal and the help needed for the hospitality suite.

Marine Mary Castillo accepted as MC at the June Convention doing an outstanding performance at our last conference.

March 25, 26, and 27 is the State Conference in Kissimmee.

Cliff spoke on the recent 4 Chaplains Ceremony and the representation of the 29 Jr. ROTC program.

Discussion took place on the importance of the scholarship tickets. All proceeds do go to the applicants.

Minutes of January 20, 2010 Meeting MCL 755 Tamarac Detachment

Mtg. called to order with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Treavor Wharton.

Roll call : Present were Cmd't Palermo, Sr. Vice Guiterrez, Jr Vice Motes, Jr. Past Cmnd't Handerhan, Adjutant Pacini, Paymaster Ruggiero, and Sgt. at Arms Jeff Morgan, Historian Wharton.

Minutes of previous mtg .: Cathy read the minutes adjusted Murray Wolf present for the WW II photo motion to accept by Marine Cliff Handerhan seconded by Marine Morgan.

Correspondence : Scholarship tickets arrived with the drawing held at the June State Convention. Cmd't Palermo motioned to purchase tickets…Jim said with five months to go take the tickets to our meetings to sell and then deal with the purchasing of unsold tickets.

Letter from the Bd of Trustees regarding the regulation of khaki shirts. P.O.W. shirts can be ordered at a lower price.

Gad received thank you letters for generous donation of toys from Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, Children's Home Society and JAFCO.

Paymaster : Jim gave the breakdown of funds and a motion to accept by Joe Motes seconded by Gad Aflalo.

Sickness and Distress : Evelyn Morgan's brother is still in a coma as a result of a stroke and Frank Kovacks passed away.

Standing Committees :

Special Committees : Cliff reported on the status of the 10week club. All tickets were sold with some money still in the mail. Discussion followed with the majority voting any unpaid number drawn another number will be pulled.

Unfinished Business : Joe asked Tony about status on Toys for Tots. Tony will inquire.

Dist.Vice Cmd't Ruggiero reported 42 Marine Wounded Warriors to be flown in on the 5 th for the Super Bowl. A pig roast will be held in their honor. Lou Slagle had acquired everything for the warriors except the food. All detachments assisted in making donations. Cmd't Palermo is authorized to spend 150.00 per month and without approval has approved the 150.00 to help feed the warriors. Jim Ruggiero made a personal donation of 100.00 towards the pig roast. On .Feb 6 th is a district meeting hosted by Vandergrift detachment in West Palm Beach with a spaghetti dinner fundraiser. It is also Marine Castillo's birthday.

Anyone planning to attend the Spring Conference in Orlando needs to let Jim know. The Devil Dogs and MCL 755 detachment will each take ½ page ad in the journal.

Our detachment will host the June Convention held June 24 thru the 27. Cmd't John Palermo will chair the hospitality suite and Vice Sr Vice Cmd't Tony Gutierrez will co-chair. Help will be needed.

New Business: $100.00 was approved for the VA coffee fund and $50.00 to the Leathernecks Motorcycle Club. Joe Motes motioned to accept seconded by Mike Burns.

Churches need to push back on the Troop package program because of the pouring out for the Haiti disaster.

Cmd't Palermo will not be available for the April meeting. Vice Cmd't Gutierrez will take over.

Nominations will start next month. Gad will chair the nomination committee and will

require two others.

The meeting was called to order at with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Evelyn Morgan.

Roll Call: Present were State Chaplain and MCL 755 Commandant Palermo, Sr. Vice Gutierrez, Jr. Vice Motes, District 10 Chairman and MCL 755 Paymaster Ruggiero, Past Commandant Handerhan, Adjutant Pacini, Chaplain Evelyn Morgan , Sgt at Arms Jeff Morgan and Color Sgt Norberto.

Applications for Membership: Gy/Sgt Francisco Santos, S/Sgt. Rudinne Andron, Sgt. Jonathan Castro, Sgt. Erik Munoz and Sgt. Edgardo Rubin.

Commandant Palermo performed the Ceremony of Initiation of the applicants into the Marine Corps League Tamarac Detachment 755.

Many guests were in attendance for our Holiday Party.

Holiday Party

The Holiday Party was well attended by families and friends of the MCL Tamarac Detachment 755 membership following the brief meeting on Wednesday December 16, 2009.

The children of Deborah Khan including Sultan and Omar and the children of Arlene Santiago include Ashley and Destiny and Jim Ruggiero's son Christopher were happy receiving presents distributed by a newly installed Marine Gy/Sgt. Santos.

World War II veterans including: Hy Finkelstein, Bob Hoover, Dick Franchino, Sherry Heldman, Lou Annacone, Joe Mirsky, & Elvira DuNair were recognized, honored and photographed. Missing from photo were: Janet Eno, Ed Weber, & Murray Wolfe.Joe Mirsky contributed a decorated cake cut by the oldest and youngest Marines at the party.

The food was in abundance donated by the membership.

Thanks went to the combined efforts of Dale MacCutcheon and Marilyn Stykes.

October 21, 2009 Minutes of Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 1930 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Evelyn Morgan.

Guests include State Chaplain John Palermo, Past Commandants Jim Ruggiero and Cliff Handerhan. Also Eric Sedlock and Jack Moran or Monan( unable to decipher last name)

Roll call: present were Cmd't Palermo, Sr.Vice Cmd't Gutierrez, Jr.Vice Motes, Sgt at arms Jeff Morgan, Adj't Pacini, Chaplain Evelyn Morgan, Fund Raiser Gad Aflalo, Color Sgt. Norberto.

Minutes of previous meeting:: Cathy read the minutes of Sept. 16 meeting. Joe Motes motioned to accept the amended version scratching the 100.00 to the Church by the Glades. Seconded by Gad Aflalo.

Correspondence: Dale and Marilyn are spearheading a troop pkg. program at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Boca. The program will take place in February giving the parish an opportunity to make the necessary arrangements and announcements to the parishioners.

Marine Corps League Intracoastal Detachment 1058 will hold the 2009 Marine Corps Ball on Friday Nov 6, 2009 at the Elks Club in Pompano Beach.at 40.00 p.p.

West Palm Beach will be holding their Ball on Nov. 7 th at the Marriott Hotel.

Miami Marine Corp Birthday Ball to be held Tuesday Nov. 10 th at Jungle Island in Miami.

Received a letter from the Veterans Coalition in Boca with a request for the detachment to preside over activities on Veterans Day November 11 th . A second letter came from the City of Sunrise requesting the detachment to participate at their ceremony. It has been a policy to accept the first written request being Boca. Dick Lee had made unauthorized commitments for the detachment to participate at Boca Coalition. Commitments can only be made by the approval of the voting membership.

E-mail on a fundraiser from Applebee's. They will open for a breakfast supplying the cooks while we supply the wait staff. The detachment will benefit from a percentage of the tickets. Jim will get more info.

Paymaster Report: Jim read his August report. Tony Gutierrez motioned to accept seconded by Cliff Handerhan. He gave a report on September 2009 accounts with Joe Motes motioning to accept seconded by Cliff Handerhan.

Sickness and Distress: Marine Terry Hall passed away recently. Overnight our detachment had 7 Marines show up for the viewing and 5 at the cemetery. The Marine Corp Reserves had the incorrect date and failed to show up at the cemetery. Detachment 755 presided over the honors of a fallen Marine. The Reserves apologetic are having a placque made for the widow Lynn Hall.

Mike LaBozzetta's wife is sick and Mary Castillo has the flu. John Palermo's cousin passed away.

Report of Officers: Joe Motes gave the rundown of the Marine Corp Birthday Balls. He was looking for two Marines in uniform to volunteer on December 12 th at noon for The Wreaths Across America in Ft Worth. The American Heritage School in Pembroke Pines will hold a celebration of Veterans Day on Tues. Nov 10 with appropriate musical selections performed by the students. Applebee's invite all veterans to eat free on Veterans Days with proper identification. The Golden Coral restaurants will also provide free meals to our veterans who produce a military ID card. Simoniz Car Wash will honor veterans with a free full service car wash on Veterans Day with proof of a military ID card.

Joe requested the detachment buy a full page ad in his journal for the District Ball he hosts as District Commander. Gad motioned the detachment buy the full page ad at $75.00 with a second by Mike Burns.

The Christmas party is scheduled for our Dec 18 meeting night with a short business meeting followed by our Holiday party, Dale will contact the family in need to be present and provide us with their wish list. She will be the person to contact with what covered dish the members will be taking to the party. Tony Gutierrez motioned to accept seconded by Joe Motes.

Sr. Vice Cmd't Gutierrez volunteered to spearhead the Toys for Tots program. He needs to be provided with names of organizations having boxes, locations, addresses and contact persons with telephone numbers. The items will be brought to a centralized location with a request for a Dec 1 deadline.

Good of the League: Cliff presented Bob Hoover with a shirt for his assistance at our past conference. November and December the ship store will be open in its entirety. Our troop package program is a year round project. Any church or synagogue wishing to participate can. Mike Burns thanked the membership for all the care and kindness shown him during his recent illness.

Cmd't Palermo presented Bill Smith with a Meritorious Commendation for 2008-2009. And Marvin Schentzel with a Meritorious Commendation for 2008-2009 and 2007-2008.

Meeting closed at 2040.

September 16, 2009 Minutes of Meeting

Meeting was called to order at 19:30 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Evelyn Morgan.

Guests included: State Chaplain Palermo, Past Cmd't Handerhan, Nat'l Ass't Sgt at Arms Castillo and Marilyn Stykes.

Roll call: Present were Cmd't Palermo, Sr. Vice Gutierrez, Adjutant Pacini, Chaplain Evelyn Morgan, Sgt. at Arms Jeff Morgan, Fund Raiser Gad Alfalo, Judge Advocate Gewirtz.

Applications for Membership: Eduardo Rubio, Jonathan Castro, Eric Munoz, Recruiters Elvis-John Baptiste, Lennon Rocha.

Jeff had spoken with Pastor Scott at the Church by the Glades regarding Toys for Tots at the church. Cmd't. Palermo motioned to donate $100.00 to the Church by the Glades for Toys for the Children. Mary Castillo motioned to accept seconded by Bill Smith.

Lady of the Lourdes Church in Boca would like to do a troop package program like the Church by the Glades.

Correspondence: Leadership School class on Friday October 23. Information on Camp Lejune Contamination of Water Supply, the National Museum of the Marine Corp. MCL Challenge Coins, the Northwest Territorial Mint Coins. Mary gave a recap of MCL MN . and TWS Reflection.

The ban on khaki shirts came under such debate it will be brought up again to bring them back.

Vic Vultaggio of Spring Hill will be running for National Commandant at the August 2010 Convention in NC. Support from MCL 755 would be appreciated.

Minutes of June 17, 2009 : Cathy read the minutes. Jeff Morgan motioned to accept second by Cliff Handerhan.

Paymaster Report: Jim was unable to attend because of sickness.

Sickness and Distress: Trevor had a death in the family and had been back and forth out of town for services. Jim Ruggiero has been having medical problems and Mike Burns has been in the hospital and Jeremy McGraw, the Marine killed in a parachute accident was scheduled for burial. Evelyn will send cards.

Report of Officers: Cathy read the Membership report.

Marine Stanley Kaplan died while Cmd't Palermo and Sr. Vice Gutierrez were en route to visit him in hospice. They were met by his wife and daughter and were told they would be advised of the funeral arrangement. West Palm was notified and within a 24 hour period the Leathernecks Motorcycle Group and Gad Aflalo escorted WWII Marine Veteran Kaplan.

Vice Cmd't Gutierrez recruited recruiters who will be here once a month.

He is looking at a Mess Night in 2010.

Gad was very proud of the 3 or 4 Marines in uniform besides the Leathernecks representing 75% who showed up for the Marine's funeral.

Jeff Morgan discussed the collections for troop packages at the Church by the Glades. Flyers would be made up and passed out by volunteers from the league on Sat and Sun the 20 th and 21st and June 27 th and 28 th . The dates for the collection of donations is tentative for July 4 th and 5 th.

Installation of Officers May 16, 2009

Past Commandant Jim Ruggiero installed newly elected Commandant John Palermo and his staff at the Installation of Officers Dinner, on Saturday evening May 16, 2009 , at the Margate American Legion.

40 guests including MCL Detachment 755 members, friends and family attended the memorable ceremony as Commandant John Palermo and his newly elected staff including Sr. Vice Commandant Tony Gutierrez, Jr. Vice Commandant Joe Motes, Sgt. at Arms Jeff Morgan, Adjutant Cathy Pacini, Chaplain Evelyn Morgan, and Color Sgt. Angelo Norberto took their oaths of office.

Commandant Cliff Handerhan presented the Detachment Colors to newly elected Commandant John Palermo and passed the gavel to him, as a token of the change of command.

The meeting was called to order at 1900 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Evelyn Morgan.

Guests included National Ass't Sgt at Arms Mary Castillo, District 10 Commandant Jesus Pintos, Past Commandant of Vandergiff Detachment Carlos Rodriguez, Past Commandant Jim Ruggiero and State Chaplain John Palermo.

There was an oversight at the April 15 meeting regarding the elections of new officers. Adjutant Pacini is not a voting member and should not have cast the one vote in the election. Therefore Commandant Handerhan turned the floor over to Co-Chairman of the Nomination Committee Tony Gutierrez.

Nominations were opened on the floor for Commandant. Paymaster Jim Ruggiero cast one vote electing John Palermo as Commandant. Nominations were opened on the floor for Sr. Vice Commandant. Paymaster Jim Ruggiero cast one vote electing Tony Gutierrez as Sr. Vice Commandant. Nominations were opened on the floor for Jr. Vice Commandant. Adam's father who is not a Marine expressed his astonishment of Marines love for one another as so expressed by the Marine Corps League that day. And, a thank you from the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital for the donation of toys. Information on the Gateway Rifle and Pistol Club in Jacksonville Fl. sponsoring Spring 2009 match. PO Box due. Information on the National Convention to be held in Rochester MN . A letter from Jenalyn Arante, a student from Spring Hills requesting a donation to help defer the cost of her participation as a People to People Student Ambassador. Will check further for validity before making a motion. 

Report of paymaster: Jim gave his report for March 2009 on the checking, savings and troop package accounts. Joe Motes motioned to accept seconded by Kevin O'Callaghan. Motion passed. 

Ed Weber and Tony Gutierrez performed an Internal Audit on the accounts with only a two cent discrepancy. Bill Smith motioned to accept the report seconded by Angelo Norberto. Motion passed.

Good of the League: Marine Bill Smith presented the detachment with a check for $1500.00 from his friend Dan Levin. Motion passed. John approached in the legion for a donation of $50.00 for the March of Dimes. 

Mary Castillo thanked the membership for her support and announced she is officially a life member of the Tamarac detachment. And, she reinstated her membership with the Women Marines to represent them in presenting an award to the outstanding cadet at Deerfield Beach High School MCJROTC Awards Program. She was recently appointed as the Recruiter and actively taping a recruiter video that will be placed on the SE Division website. 

Jim announced the Installation Dinner is May 16 th at the Legion. He was promising a 35-40 count asking for the membership support.

The Installation dinner is scheduled for May 16. The cost is $15.00 p.p. for prime rib or chicken. There will be an in hall cash bar at a cost to the Det. of $40.00. Jim suggested we have a minimum of 35-40 to cover the cost. Discussion took place. Gad motioned to obtain donations from the members instead of a charge with guests paying the cost of $15.00 with the detachment paying any difference. Jeff Morgan seconded the motion to include guests to pay the $!5.00 cost. The motion was defeated with eight opposed and six in favor.

An Auditing Committee is needed to verify the books. Ed Weber will chair the Auditing Committee.

Unfinished Business: Ed Weber talked about Flight Assoc. Comm. attempting to recover & identify bodies of 140 American Marines buried on Tarawa during the fighting there during WWII.

Judge Advocate Mirsky turned over all his material stating it was his last assignment before retiring the position. Gad received a thank you from the Joe DiMaggio Hospital Attending a breakfast for the Women in Distress learning they are in need of assistance. A clothing drive was suggested. Cell phones could be donated to the Women in Distress for 911 calls. Tony distributed the remainder of the Certificates of Appreciation for the Toys for Tots program. John reported the Grand Opening of the AmVets on March 28.

Cliff had an article about the two fallen Marines posthumously awarded the Navy Crosses for action in Iraq in 2008.

Cmd't Handerhan presented Life Membership Certificates and membership pins to Col. Scott Slater and James Savage.

John reminded the member of the HBO showing of Taking Chance to be aired on Saturday night at 8 o'clock . Joe can make DVD 's from a VHS tape.

•  Correspondence: Jim read the letter received from Commandant of the Marine Corps. League in regards to Camp LeJeune Water Registry on the contaminated water between the dates 1957 thru 1987. The water was polluted with TCE and PCE (metal degreaser and dry cleaning agent). Register online or call.

•  Package was received on the Spring Conference being held March 19 thru March 22, 2009 at the Ramada Orlando Celebration Resort and Convention Ctr. Info on hand.

November 19, 2009 Minutes of Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 1930 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Wharton.

Guests included Nat'l Assistant Sgt at Arms Mary Castillo and State Chaplain John Palermo. Check presented to Cmdt Handerhan of $150.00 from Swamp Fox Society for shipping troop packages.

Correspondence: Letter from the Marine Corps League Aux. to sell raffle tickets to help defray the cost of running National Headquarters.

A card from Cumberland County Young Marines thanking the Marine Corps and the State of Florida for starting the Young Marine Program. A Letter from Rep for the American Legion Aux. regarding the Sandy Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home thanking the detachment for donation of cases of O'Doules used for a bingo party.

The attendance at Christopher's for Men in Uniform where Det. 755 would reap a benefit had a poor detachment showing of only three members.

Paymaster: Jim had been hospitalized for nine days delaying a complete financial report.

He will have a completed report at next months meeting. Tony Gutierrez motioned to accept seconded by Dick Franchino. Motion carried.

Report of Officers: Membership report was left on tables. Joe updated the membership On Toys for Tots Program. The reserves will be making pickups on December 15 and will call the contact person for an address. He needs a name, address and telephone number of contact person to put into reserves database. The next newsletter will be out for January and February. Motion to accept by Tony Gutierrez seconded by Jim Ruggiero.

Veterans Day Ceremony at Palmetto Veterans Park was well attended by our Detachment as was the service for the death of a Marine.

Life Membership dues will be increasing Jan 1, 2009 by National.

Special Committees: The 10 week club will have its final drawing at the end of the meeting.

Unfinished Business: Jim will be transferring funds to where they were first appropriated and to get the books back in line so everyone has full understanding of what is being done. The conference checking account began by transferring $5000.00 from the savings account. That $5000.00 will go back into savings. What is left in the conference account will go to the operating account; the conference account will be maintained as troop package funds.

New Business: None

Good of the League: Discussion regarding the death of a Marine. Requests for firing squad or Marine Corps Unit unless it goes thru Quantico and the only one able to do this is the family. The family sends a DD 214 to Quantico who dispatches it to locals who send it to the Unit. The funeral parlor makes all the arrangements when receiving a DD 214 in any branch of the service. We may help obtaining the DD 214.

Veterans Park in Coconut Creek was well attended by the detachment.

Discussion: DD2 14's: A copy is requested when applying for membership as proof they served but it may be requested back. Some are on file but not all.

Mary presented Robin his Appreciation Certificate for his help at fall conference. She is also intending to transfer her membership to our detachment next month. She was selling tickets for a spaghetti dinner on Jan 17 at Pound 278. Brought a copy of Las Vegas Ball journal for us to see.

There is a website to confirm your DD 214 and can order a DD 214 and DD 215 and can go to our website under links.

Next month as a tradition we will have a short business meeting followed with a holiday party. Jim wanted a motion from the body for the detachment to donate $150.00 to purchase an array of food not donated. Tony Gutierrez motioned to accept seconded by Hy Finkelstein.

•  The American Legion Aux. requested a $100.00 donation to aid in their Kids in Distress program via adopting a family in need. Discussion took place. John Palermo motioned to accept seconded by Tony Gutierrez. Motion carried.

•  Discussion took place on looking into assisting needy families with children in our community to bring cheer to the holiday season. Motion to spend (not to exceed) up to $400.00 for this purpose was made by Jim Ruggiero seconded by Dick Franchino, motion carried with one opposed.

Minutes of Meeting October 15, 2008

The Meeting was called to order at 1930 with a Salute to the Flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Wharton.

Minutes: Cathy read the minutes of previous meeting. Sherry Helman motioned to accept seconded by Gad Aflalo.

Correspondence: Jim received complimentary and negative feed back on the conference. Enables us to where we can improve ourselves in the future. American Legion Post 227 in Boca was extending an open invitation welcoming home Marine Cpl John Gordon on October 26 th who will be home for a short time before being shipped out again to Afghanistan.

Paymaster Report: Jim gave his Sept 2008 report with a motion to accept by Joe Motes seconded by Hy Finklestein.

Report of Officers: Joe, Commander of 9 th District American Legion, announced a ball in November honoring all past commanders. He requested the detachment buy a half page ad in their book for $45.00. Jim motioned to take a full page for$75.00 for the total support the American Legions gave our detachment on our conference journal. Bill Smith seconded the motion.

The Inter coastal detachment is hosting a Marine Corps Birthday Ball at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club on Nov. 8. Joe is looking to putting a table together. There are other Marine Corps Birthday Balls but further away. The Hard Rock is also hosting a Marine Corps Ball the same night with several hundred Marines planning to attend.

Joe said his American Legion Post 222 will be having a Commander's Ball a week later on Nov 15.

Jim received an e-mail life member Marine Chuck Molinari has 20 boxes of goods to be shipped to our troops in Iraq . He met with Chuck and filled up his car with the boxes of gear as did Joe. They will be meeting at the lock up at 9:30 tomorrow to repack boxes to be shipped overseas. Jeff asked for a show of hands for those able to help with the troop packages. There is no more room at the storage facility and Jim and Joe are unable to keep hauling these boxes around in their cars. Jeff mentioned these packages are going to frontline Marines who do not have the opportunity to go to a PX and we should be able to give an hour of our time for them. The troop packages will go to the Post Office in Coconut Creek.

Janet and Elvira are invited to a Marine Corps Ball at Lauderdale By the Sea.

Special Committees: On the closing of the conference Jim thanked the turnout of the members of the detachment et al for the total support at the conference. A Special thanks to Marine Castillo from Vandergiff Detachment who came out to help every day during the conference who also volunteered to be MC at the dinner. The other Marine was Robin Barker from Port St Lucie who helped out everywhere needed. Talked of the gas line break we weathered through and the applause the three high schools color guards received when presenting the colors. Gratitude to Colonel Scott Slater who volunteered to be guest speaker bringing us up to date what our Marines were doing in the Southern Hemisphere. High comments were made on Scott's behalf from department staff.

Good of the League: Cliff announced several members of the detachment attended the opening of the new VA Facility in Sunrise . He spoke of the state of the art equipment. While there he met past detachment member Marty Sukoff's wife. Marty had volunteered a lot of his time at the VA at Oakland Park and would love to have been there for the dedication. She was happy to be there and happy to see the detachment in attendance.

Commandant Handerhan presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Marines Mary Castillo and Scott Slater for grateful service at the 2008 fall conference. Col Slater accepted a certificate on behalf of the Flanagan High School ROTC cadets and Mary accepted one for Robin Barker.

Jim is hoping to have certificates at next months meeting for others who helped.

Joe said the newsletter is up on the website and the newsletters will be mailed the following week. The newsletter will be called October November and December issue. The next issue will be for January and February. Pictures taken at the conference can be viewed on the website by opening scrapbook – events scrolling to the bottom click on the button and like a slide show will be seen.

Mary said she has information for those registered voters in Palm Beach county copies of the amendment to be voted on in November.

Gad provided us with information on a Men In Uniform event going on at Christopher's on October 24 th Marines Army Navy Police Firefighters. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Marine Corp League 755.

American Legion Post 157 is short on revenue and Jim requested our purchasing two refrigerated wine cooler units. Motion seconded by Gad. Motion passed.

Joe will be checking on Toys for Tots Program and newest requirements. Via e-mail the new requirements mean the chairman needs to have a background check, fingerprinting etc. Joe was insulted but Jim pointed out as in any other charitable event there are those with sticky fingers in the funds donated and they are covering themselves making sure donations given go to the Toys for Tots Program. Our detachment only collects toys but there are others that do have cash donations.

•  At our conference we were presented with a certificate overlooked at the convention. It is the National Jr. Vice Commandant Citation in appreciation and gratitude for mentimorious service in the national objectives of the Marine Corp League 100% membership and a streamer for our colors. And at the conference we received a plaque from Joe Varsallone from the City of Margate in recognition for the Marine Corp League for integrity and courage displayed by many Marines of the past today and tomorrow and recognized as once a Marine always a Marine.• 

Sgt at Arms Morgan fined anyone not having a challenge coin in possession.

September 17, 2008 Minutes of Meeting

The Meeting was called to order at 1930 with a Salute to the Flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Wharton.

Minutes of previous session: Jim motioned to waive the reading of the minutes because of a lot of business to be discussed. Seconded by Gad Aflalo.

Correspondence: Cliff received a check for a journal ad and registration

Paymaster: Jim gave his report. Ed Weber motioned to accept seconded by Joe Motes.

Sickness & Distress: Marvin Schentzel is resting at home and feeling better.

Report of Officers: Joe asked anyone willing to help out at the Ship Store to see him.

Jim said meal selections for conference had to be given to the hotel by 11 A.M. on Thurs the 18 th . He added help was needed at the conference if only for 2-3 hours. He announced the conference speaker Marine Colonel Richard Slater.

Standing Committees: John said the hospitality room was in need of nine more items and Renzo thought his bank would be helping out donating those goods. The money spent at Restaurant Depot was a donation from Gad. John is in need of help at the bar and selling tickets.

Unfinished Business: Bill Smith donated 14 books with proceeds going into the conference fund with the intention of placing a book on 14 wounded warrior tables. Jim spoke of the entertainment at the conference. Jim discussed the problems with filling the wounded warrior tables. His plans include the showing of a slide of the History of the Marine Corp. He announced the guest speaker as Colonel Slater.

Colonel Slater addressed the Marines stationed in So.America leading the charge to train folks to fight the war on terrorism and drugs. His idea is for a 10 minute pitch on just what the Marines are doing in So. America and Central America .. The ROTC cadets will be in attendance at the conference.

New Business: The 10 week Club is underway with the first drawing after the meeting.

Gad respectfully stepped down after holding a 6 year position as fund raiser. Angelo will now assume the position. Gad who would turn 66 the following day planned on jumping from an airplane to sky dive.

And, if you haven't already done so there is space available in the journal to support the conference fund. Two generous donations have come in. Marine Weber contributed $200.00 and $100.00 from Dale. Tony Gutierrez has donated a full set of books. There will be a silent auction at the conference

Good of the League: Jeff fined the membership $1.00 for those having applications on them and $2.00 to those without one with the proceeds benefiting the conference fund.

John asked for bartenders to help out 2-3 hours at the conference.

Aug. 20, 2008 Minutes of Meeting

The meeting was called to order at1930 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Trevor Wharton.

Guests included Mary Castillo Nat'l Ass't Sgt at Arms and State Chaplain John Palermo.

Minutes: Cathy read the minutes Ed Weber motioned to accept and Joe Motes seconded.

In regards to the Church by the Glades an additional $55.00 was collected for a total of $1749.97.

Correspondence: Cliff rec'd a check for an ad from Lynn Regional Cancer Center , a booster renewal from Marvin Schentzel, a letter and donation for the Troop Pkg. Program from Elvira and a check for an ad in the Journal from Sherry Heldman. Also an e-mail from a mother ( Elizabeth) saying there is a chance her son will be coming home in September as they are bringing the troops home early in hopes to send them back out to Afghanistan. She wanted an address for the church to send them a proper mama thank you. And there was a story in the newspaper about a local teen launching her own program to support the Marines collecting canned goods and non perishable donations calling it Brittany's Project.

Paymasters Report: Jim read his report and John Palermo motioned to accept seconded by Joe Motes.

Sickness and Distress: Joe had e-mail about a retired life time member of the Marine Corps League in Dania Beach and would like a visit from fellow Marines because he is almost deaf and cannot hear on the phone. Joe Mirsky suggested a few from the detachment get together and visit the housebound Marine.

Report of Officers: Joe had e-mail from a company called Totaline with 18 buildings in Fla. with Carrier a/c's wanting to work with the Marine Corps League on the Toys For Tots Program. A toy collection box will be delivered to the Pompano Beach location on Nov 1 st and picked up around Dec 15 th.

Standing Committees: The 10 week Club started off at last months meeting with tickets available now.

Special Committees: Jim said there was only 6 weeks until the fall conference. He again asked for volunteers to help where needed if only to give a couple of hours would be a big help. We are also in need of supplies for the hospitality room. A list of items needed and a sign up sheet was available. And volunteers were needed to canvass the nearby mall for ads and donations. Cliff, John, Joe Mirsky, Mary and Jim volunteered to meet at noon at the hotel.

John is chairperson for the hospitality suite and to get in touch with him if you could help out with your services or donations. We were asked to pick up soda or water when on sale while shopping.

July 17, 2008 Minutes of Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 1930 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Trevor Wharton.

Guests included Louis Gewirtz and Past Commandant Kevin O'Callaghan and mascot Shamus O'Callaghan.

Roll Call: Present were Commandant Handerhan, Jr.Vice Motes, Judge Advocate Mirsky, Paymaster Ruggiero, Adjutant Pacini, Chaplain Wharton and Fund Raiser Aflalo.

Minutes: Cathy read the minutes with a motion to accept by Kevin O'Callaghan seconded by Gad Aflalo.

Correspondence: Commandant Handerhan received another letter from Past Commandant Mike LaBozzetta. It appears old friend Loreth who again is representing himself as a Marine veteran in No Carolina. Mike tried to contact the T.V. Station that showed the video but the station refused to send a copy and get involved in any on going suites claiming stolen valor. Under the New Stolen Valor Act the federal government has prosecuted some people. Jim added Alan Loreth of the U.S.Army he has been charged by the Department of No Carolina for Stolen Valor. He is presently incarcerated and it has been turned over to the FBI and the legal process has been begun. Jim faxed over to the Dept of No Carolina the original DD 214 that he submitted to this Detachment that he fraudulently altered to make himself look like a Marine. There was a video in Raleigh where he posed and said he was a retired marine and that he loved his country and had a tattoo on his forearm of the eagle globe and anchor. He has been on our roster with National for about the past ten years and we have just recently got him off our roster. There will be more discussion on this with Jim and the National Judge Advocate at the National Convention next month on this issue along with the Dept of No Carolina Commandant because he has a lot of paper work on Loreth gathered throughout the years and would be handing that over to them. It can soon be put to rest. Cliff continued stating that after initially being charged with falsifying his documents he wrote a letter of apology saying he would never do anything like this again.

Sickness and Distress: Joe Mirsky gave update on Harry Belford's progress after speaking with Harry and his wife. Harry can barely get around but is using a walker and is undergoing therapy.

Paymaster: Jim gave his reports with a motion to accept by Kevin O'Callaghan seconded by Louis Gewirtz. (Attached.)

Report of Officers: Joe said his newsletter is up on the website ready to be viewed. He also said at the Convention in Orlando he received a plaque for the Best Detachment of the Year Website.

Special Committees: Cliff reported on the outcome of the weekends of the 5 th and 6 th and 12 th and 13 th at the Church by the Glades troop package collections. Over the two weekends they were able to ship out about 26 packages and collected $1719.97 in cash donations from the generosity of the congregation still more boxes of items to be broken down and shipped. Almost 1,000 lbs. shipped this past week.

Cliff also presented a flag flown at Al Asad Air Base and flag display case to the pastor at the Church by the Glades and a Certificate of Appreciation to the Women of Mission who were most valuable to the Troop Package Program. Gad was in touch with a mother of a Marine going from Iraq to Afghanistan and Cliff asked to get names and addresses to be able to send packages. Presently we have only seven names and to get the info to Joe or to Cliff.

We are in need of names and addresses to send troop packages. The Chaplain at the Church by the Glades will make that request from the pulpit during the services.

Unfinished Business: Co-chairman Jim Ruggiero gave an update on the fall conference. He said it was going real slow. He reported on the attendance of detachments at the convention and profit from the Journal at the recent Convention in Claremont . Jim had paperwork on the table including program journal rates and different costs. Another sheet-listed items needed for the Hospitality Suite. Anything donated would be gratefully appreciated. Jim spoke about the Fisher House in the Miami area housing the spouses of our wounded heroes. He also would like the detachment to buy a table for the Wounded Warriors and to include a spouse if they were in town. He is hoping to show the State we are a strong detachment and can make this a successful conference. He said the detachment was committed to 80 dinners and was hoping our membership will be attending. He is still looking for help with hospitality goods. Jim spoke from his heart touching many areas for the Marine Corps and our veterans. He stressed being taught as a Marine honor, courage and commitment and looking out for each other covering each other's back. The Detachment needs everyone's help getting involved to make this conference a success.

New Business: Bill Smith corresponds with someone from Iraq now in Afghanistan . They give soccer balls to teenage kids. Because of those soccer balls intelligence comes back to them. He would like the detachment to send some soccer balls. Cliff requested that if there is something our troops need and not included in the packages to let him know.

Jim also said we have about 8-10 more boxes to be shipped out at a cost of about $200.00 with a balance of about 2800.00 left in the Troop Package Program. What comes to mind is Troop Care. He asked for a motion to sponsor a table for our wounded heroes and asked what other way is to honor them then to invite them to attend our conference and pay for their meal with the funding coming from the Troop Package Program. Joe Motes made the motion the detachment sponsor a table. Bill Smith seconded the motion. There was a vote not to exceed $500.00. Joe read e-mail received from Staff Sgt. Jessie Ramirez titled Message from Iraq . He is based out of Camp Pendleton in Cal . He says they get a lot of care packages and the remains go the passengers when waiting for their helicopters. He came across our Jan 2007 newsletter and starting reading through our site. He said getting a care package from home is like Christmas all over again. He said all the Marines here HLZ Ramadi thank us for all the support we give and to stay motivated.

Announcements: Cliff said the 10 week Club will be starting in September and explained what the club was and said he does have tickets available now.

The meeting was called to order at 1940 with a salute to the flag and opening prayer by Chaplain Trevor Wharton.

Guest speakers were Richard Rash to speak on reverse mortgages and Phil Patlis on financial planning.

Roll Call: Present were Commandant, Sr.Vice, Jr.Vice, Judge Advocate, Adjutant, Paymaster, Chaplain and Fund Raiser.

Minutes: May 21 st minutes were read and with a correction adding the $5000.00 funds to open the Fall Conference checking account came out of the savings account Ed Weber motioned to accept seconded by Joe Motes.

Correspondence: Joe Motes gave Cliff letters from the kids from the school who painted the pillowcases to be included in the troop package.

Paymasters report: Jim gave his report on all three accounts. Dick Franchino motioned to accept seconded by Ed Weber.

Sickness: Jan Eno is in the hospital and Jim gave an update on Harry Belford in rehab.

Report of Officers: Joe distributed status reports to all tables and said there was no newsletter this month.

Paymaster: Jim clarified the scuttlebutt going around regarding account funds. Troop package money is in the regular account. Where was the $800.00 going to come from for the newly purchased rifles? Jim recommended a transfer from the savings to the operating fund. A discussion took place with John Palermo saying the ancillary fund money was supposed to be used or be taxed on it. Ed Weber recommended finding out at the conference regarding the building fund and ancillary fund. He recommended the rifle money be taken from the savings to the checking. Jim motioned to accept seconded by Bill Smith.

Joe Motes said we had to file form 990 staying under the $25,000 or lose the charter.

Special Committees: Jim wanted everyone to take a pre-made package hoping to generate ads through businesses and members to help make the fall conference a success. Both speakers Richard Rash and Phil Patlis took tables for $150.00 per table. Dick Franchino was the winner of a book donated by Mr. Patlis on Marine Corps history.

Good of the League: John Palermo made an appeal to send post cards to all members asking for a $20.00 ad.

Announcements: Cliff, Jim and Joe boxed up seven troop packages and mailed them all. Three of the boxes were from the Weston Elementary containing the pillowcases.

Church of the Glades will be handing out flyers with a list of requested items for the troops on June 28 th and 29 th . Cliff is looking for volunteers for July 5 th and 6 th and 12 th and 13 th at the Church.

Jim recommended months ago to give the Church a plaque and flag from Iraq . We need to take the display case to First Sign.

Ed Weber announced the good news of the Marines detained in Cal. on the crimes in Iraq being acquitted.

Jim Ruggiero handed Sr.Vice Commandant John Palermo a gold watch to present to Commandant Cliff Handerhan serving the detachment for his third term and never endless work. The watch bears an inscription Det.755 Commandant 2006-2008 Commandant Handerhan presented Bill Smith his Life Membership.

Meeting closed at 2030.
